About the Course

If you're a lawyer practicing in Ontario or an accountant supporting legal professionals, this course was designed with you in mind. The Law Society of Ontario’s By-Law 9 governs financial record-keeping and reporting for lawyers. While compliance is mandatory, the by-law itself is often difficult to interpret, filled with technical language and layered requirements. That’s why this course breaks it down into clear, practical lessons, helping you understand not only what is required—but why it matters.

You’ll learn through real-life examples and software demos in CosmoLex, making it practical and directly applicable to your firm.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to tighten up your processes, this course gives you the tools to build a strong financial foundation.

Meet Your Instructor

My name is Simran Kaur, and I’m the founder and CEO of Counting Cloud.

My journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, and Management in 2011, followed by a Master’s in Finance, and eventually my CPA designation. Along the way, I gained experience at the CRA and in mid-sized public firms, serving owner-managed businesses and seeing firsthand both their strengths and their challenges.

Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to specialize in helping law firms stay compliant, audit-ready, and financially organized. Over the years, I’ve worked with firms of all sizes, and one theme comes up again and again: legal accounting can feel overwhelming. Between client work, By-Law 9 requirements, and managing firm operations, it’s easy to feel stretched thin.

That’s why I created this course. The Bookkeeping for Lawyers course is designed to break everything down into clear, manageable steps — so you can understand your financial systems, stay on top of compliance, and feel more in control of your practice’s finances.

You don’t need to become an accountant. But you do need to feel confident about what’s happening behind the scenes. And that’s exactly what we’ll work on together in this program.

  • Common pitfalls that trigger compliance issues — and how to avoid them.
  • Step-by-step walkthroughs using CosmoLex software to apply everything in real-life scenarios.
